Introducing...Mrs. Hillman...The Teacher
Greetings Team Motivation!
To give you some background of who I am and my journey in how I became our 6th grade Language Arts and Science instructor I must begin with where I am from…
I was born and raised in Western New York, just south of Buffalo. My dad was the Superintendent (mayor) of our small town and he too was a Science teacher. I grew up hunting (with a camera) and fishing along side my dad and Brother Brian and Sister Laurie. By the 6th grade I was totally training in the martial arts and began to compete at a national level. This was AWESOME! I originally wanted to become a police officer but then I had an experience that changed my mind. I realized that what my family did as educators was proactive toward crime and if I could have a positive effect in students’ lives early enough I may be able to prevent bad decisions later in their lives.
So….I became a teacher receiving my degree from SUNY Fredonia and then headed south where I found my first job…and my husband Ben! He too is a blackbelt and we were married in a boxing ring with “spit-buckets” filled with flowers and all! Mr. Hillman and I have 4 children (Tygress 31, Theo 18, Savvy 16, and Sophia 11) and one grandson (Maision 3).
The year before I left Augusta, Georgia where I taught for 13 years at Collins Elementary and also Fort Gordon, GA I was given a pretty awesome title as Teacher of the Year! It was a pretty great honor traveling around the state of Georgia speaking to teachers and parents about education. When we were hunting for the PERFECT school district to become part of for our own children…OLATHE was the BEST! I was hired at the district level and I chose Washington Elementary to teach 6th grade! It was a perfect fit. When the district decided to move 6th grade to the middle school…Mrs. Lane asked for me to come teach Science for her Cyclones! …and this is how my journey lead me to Mr. Buss and my Team Motivation students!
Through the years I have been honored with awards and opportunities within education! What I know is that each year is a brand new year with GREAT POSSIBILITIES! It is my honor to teach each of my students because I learn from each of them more than I teach! Learning is work and hard work pays off! I am a dreamer…a coach… a problem solver…a parent… an innovator… a teacher… and a believer that there is a purpose in all we do each day! I have told each of my students parents that on our team your child will be a better version of themselves because we had this time together…and I believe it!
